Senior Scholarships

The benevolent culture of the Alter community serves as a financial resource for graduating seniors who aspire to continue their education beyond Alter. Several scholarships have been created to recognize graduating seniors’ achievements and post-secondary academic pursuits.

We encourage all our seniors to review the list of available scholarships  which range from $500-$5,000. Below are the minimum criteria and deadlines for applying.  Please note that scholarships managed through the Dayton Foundation have a March 7th deadline.

Senior Scholarship Application Criteria:

  • Applications for senior scholarships will be accepted through March 31st, except for those managed by the Dayton Foundation.
  • Scholarships managed by the Dayton Foundation have a March 7th deadline.  In order to access the Dayton Foundation General Application, each student must sign-up online and create an account.
  • Only Seniors with a good disciplinary standing and positive record of behavior will be considered.
  • Some senior scholarships require a minimum GPA to apply.
  • For scholarships that require references, each reference should be a non-family member. References are submitted via an online form due by March 31st. Please share this link with your reference: https://alterhs.org/scholarship-reference-form/
  • Most scholarships require an essay. Be sure your essay is specific to the prompt provided, written by the student and not AI or parent generated.

Mary Lynn Dorow Performing Arts Scholarship

Established in 2021 to honor Mary Lynn Dorow who battled Ovarian Cancer. Mary Lynn was known for her positive attitude, perseverance, will, fight, strength, teamwork, courage, and a BIG SMILE! Coaching a dance team of 65-75 young ladies, Mary Lynn instilled in these young women the opportunity to look for the strength in themselves and each other and find positive attributes among all members in a large teamwork environment. This scholarship will provide tuition assistance to one female who has participated in a theatre or dance group or club. 

Kacie & Tom Hausfeld Scholarship

The Kacie and Tom Hausfeld Scholarship Fund was established by family and friends to ensure that the lives of Tom and Kacie will continue to be celebrated year after year as this scholarship is awarded.

Applicants must be graduating from Alter High School, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be accepted to attend the University of Dayton as a full-time student.

MAK Scholarship

The Mark Andrew Kreusch Memorial Fund was founded by his family to honor Mark’s life and spirit. Mark was four years old when his life suddenly ended in a boating accident on August 11, 2007. Mark loved his family, his friends, and embraced life by enjoying all that he did. His zest for life shined through his smile and giggle. Mark’s parents vowed to keep his spirit alive by enriching the lives of other children. His family and friends still miss him dearly. Their dream is to continue his legacy. Through various projects the fund will “Leave a MARK on a child’s life.”

Michael Dorn STEM Scholarship

Mike ’82 and Patty Dorn are benefactors of the Michael Dorn STEM Scholarship through the Green Giving Foundation. Graduating seniors with a dedicated STEM history and who will be continuing their education toward a degree in science, technology, engineering, math, or related field, are asked to apply.

The Schimpf Family Hope Squad Scholarship

The Schimpf Family Hope Squad Scholarship provides a one year, $1,000 tuition grant for a graduating senior from Alter High School to be used towards his or her college education.

The recipient of this scholarship is a current HOPE SQUAD LEADER

The Bernadette Volpe Mitsch Scholarship Grant

The Bernadette Volpe Mitsch Scholarship was established by Bernadette’s loving husband, Robert Mitsch. Bernadette, a lifelong educator, dedicated herself to educating children, spending 35 years in the classroom teaching English and Language Arts. Students with a passion for teaching and who are pursuing a degree in teaching should apply for this renewable scholarship.

The Wiz Scholarship Fund

Bob “the Wiz” Ellis was a coach, father, friend, and pillar of the community. In everything the Wiz did he emphasized hard work and dedication to achieve success not only on the athletic field but also in the classroom.

Open to graduating seniors who have participated in an athletic sport as a player or manager.

The Barb Malloy Scholarship

This scholarship was established by friends and family to ensure that the life of 1971 alum, Barbara Sowar Malloy, will be celebrated year after year. Barb lived a life of service to the Alter community, her church, the nursing profession, and her family.

This scholarship is awarded to an Alter senior who will be pursuing a career in Nursing.

The Bill & Mary Ellen Hagan Scholarship

The Bill & Mary Ellen Hagan Scholarship provides a one year $5,000 tuition grant for an Alter senior or Alter graduate that desires and values a Catholic education at the University of Notre Dame. The primary goal is to provide financial assistance to those students and families who, without the grant, would otherwise be unable to afford the Notre Dame tuition.

Major General James Kelley Service Scholarship

The Major General James Kelley (US Army Ret), Distinguished Alumnus – Class of 1970 and wife Song Li, created this scholarship for graduates who are committed to making a difference in the world.

Recipients must demonstrate their interest in and knowledge of service, world peace, and sustainable development.

Easterling Scholarship

Easterling studios has established a scholarship for an Alter senior involved in visual and/or digital arts, who will continue with that area of study in college.

The Tom Nikolai Scholarship

In honor of alum, finance committee chair, board member and past parent, Tom Nikolai ’78 exemplified a life of mindful service to Alter High School. This scholarship was created by his family and friends to memorialize his impact on their lives. Only applicants who will be attending The University of Dayton will be considered.

Jerry Datz ’79 Memorial Award

Created by his family and friends, the Jerry Datz ’79 Memorial Award will be given to a freshman student accepted into the Farmer School or Business at Miami University.

Jerry was a very outgoing, kind, intelligent and loving man. His love of family, work colleagues, community, sports, and physical fitness embodied his everyday life.

This scholarship is being awarded to an Alter student who shares Jerry’s academic honors, success and achievements at Alter High School where he was co-president of the 1979 senior class.  Throughout his life, Jerry positively touched many lives through his encouraging, fun and loving personality
