Planned Giving
An estate or planned gift to Alter is an excellent way to make sure that your annual support lives on in perpetuity or to make a dramatic, single impact on a particular area of interest for your family.
There is a myriad of ways to make a planned gift that would best fit into your family’s financial scope, most having substantial tax advantages for you. Here are the most typical models of support.
- Bequests – the most common and simplest form of gift planning. Leave your legacy by making a gift in your will or living trust to Alter.
- Charitable Lead Trust – is a giving vehicle for those who wish to support Alter for a specified period of time with the assets then distributed to the benefactor or their family at the conclusion of that period.
- Charitable Remainder Trust – is a way of supporting Alter at the conclusion of a specified period of time. Trusts are formed where income is distributed to the benefactor for their continued living expenses, and then upon conclusion of that time, the asset is transferred to the school.
- Charitable Gift Annuity – similar to a Charitable Lead Trust, a gift annuity is an agreement between the benefactor and the school where an asset is transferred to Alter, with the school agreeing to pay a fixed amount to the benefactor for their lifetime, not a fixed amount of years.
- Real Estate – much of the wealth in this country is in real estate holdings. There may be significant tax advantages by transferring a second home, commercial property or undeveloped land to the school.
- Donor Advised or Endowed Funds – a benefactor may choose to set up an fund with a foundation of their choice where gifts are regularly made to Alter to continue their Annual Fund giving or to support a specific area of interest.
This is merely a list of some of the most common forms of planned gifts. We recommend that you seek professional advice from your financial planner, tax consultant or attorney to decide which situation would be most advantageous for your family.
