Alter High School Student Resources

Alter High School provides assistance to eligible students in a small group setting where students work with highly qualified staff members for one period daily or on a consultation basis. Intervention Specialists reinforce content area academics, organizational and study skills. Individualized goals are monitored and collaboration between Intervention Specialist/ Teacher/Parent is established. The Learning Center’s goal is to teach students strategies they need to compensate for learning problems and to encourage students to use those strategies to become independent, successful learners while in high school and beyond.

Alter High School is committed to including individuals with disabilities as full participants in its programs, services and activities through compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the American Disabilities Act of 1990 and the applicable provisions of IDEIA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004).

The Kettering public School Psychologist works in conjunction with the Learning Center staff in regards to Multi Factored evaluations as mandated by the state of Ohio.

Information Technology Services

Technology is an intrinsic part of Archbishop Alter High School. For this reason we have established an Information Technology Services Department, known as Alter ITS. Our department has several important functions. All of them are meant to support the learning of your student when they attend our school.

We have committed our school to a 1 to 1 technology program. All four classes of Alter students have an interactive laptop computer that they can use both in school and at home. This allows the student to have the tools to engage in learning with them throughout the day, everyday.

Alter has a wireless campus designed to support the 1 to 1 program. Wireless access is available in all classrooms, the library, cafeteria, and the gym. We have a network in place that allows students, teachers and staff to utilize the Internet and software necessary for their activities.

Software has been chosen to support and engage students and teachers on the path to 21st Century Skills. Alter students have email, a portal for accessing their grades, a digital notebook on their computer, a learning management system that is used in college, and an interactive teaching software called DyKnow. Individual classes use specific software with students also. Teachers have chosen online components for their textbooks, eBooks, and programs used in and out of the class to support student learning.

Lastly, Alter ITS is staffed with a full time Help Desk Technician, a Webmaster, a Network Engineer and a Director of Technology who are all committed to serving and supporting students, teachers, and staff in their learning and professional tasks.

Scheduling

Freshman

A committee composed of the department chairs and guidance counselors review the incoming freshman academic records. Courses are recommended after reviewing the student’s placement test performance, elementary school records including standardized test scores, and elementary school teachers’ recommendations.

Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors

The guidance counselors oversee the student scheduling process. Each year the students review and evaluate his/her program of studies with their parents/guardians, teachers, and guidance counselor.

Updated scheduling information for the following school year is provided in the second semester. While students may choose elective courses, certain upper-level courses have a prerequisite for enrollment.

During the second semester, students secure signatures for all classes with a prerequisite from their current subject teacher or the teacher of the course they are requesting. All course request forms must be signed by a parent. Forms without required signatures will not be processed.

Schedule Changes

Since student scheduling requests are used to plan the
master schedule and hire teachers for the following year, once scheduling is completed, changes are not ordinarily permitted. As a rule, schedule changes are made only:

  • If the student has been academically misplaced by the teachers and/or has not met the requirements of the course or
  • If there is an irresolvable scheduling conflict.

Students must confer with teachers, parents, and their Guidance Counselor prior to requesting a change in schedule. The fee
for dropping a class is $100 and must accompany the parent permission. The Guidance Counselor will not process the schedule change without the $100 fee and parent permission in writing.

All schedule changes must be requested within the first two full weeks of the classes of each semester. After that, the course will appear as withdrawn on the student’s transcript. If the student is passing at the time of withdraw, the transcript will state WP, or withdrawn while passing. If the student is failing at the time of withdraw, the transcript will state WF, or withdrawn while failing. Students with a C or above in a particular class may not drop to a lower level class until the end of the semester.
