THE GUYS｜September 13th – 16th
Please join us in Alter’s new Conservatory of the Arts for the first of 2 Fall plays by Alter Castle Players – “The Guys”! It is a powerful and poignant play, based on a true story, involving Nick, a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the 9/11 attack and he seeks the help of an editor to help him with the eulogies he must present at their memorial services. Their experience together, as they make their way through grief, brings about a special friendship. Their shared love for the unconquerable spirit of the city is symbolic of the enduring bonds of common humanity.
STEEL MAGNOLIAS｜October 4th – 7th
Please join us in Alter’s NEW Conservatory Building for the 2nd Fall Play by The Castle Players – “Steel Magnolias”!
Truvy Jones runs a successful beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies in the neighborhood have a standing Saturday appointment. Along with her anxious and eager assistant, Annelle, Truvy styles the hair of many of the women about town: wealthy widow and former first lady of Chinquapin, Clairee Belcher, local curmudgeon Ouiser Boudreaux, intelligent and compassionate career woman M’Lynn, and her daughter Shelby, the prettiest girl in town. Shelby’s engagement is the talk of the town, but the joy and excitement of her wedding quickly turn to concern as she faces a risky pregnancy and a myriad of health complications. Eventually, when Shelby dies from complications related to her diabetes, M’Lynn has to deal with the most difficult of life’s challenges: the loss of one’s only child. As the women of Chinquapin makes their ways over life’s many hurdles together, they find comfort in one another.
SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD｜December 6th – 9th
This contemporary song cycle weaves characters and history together, illuminating the timelessness of self- discovery.
It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice… or take a stand… or turn around and go back. These are the stories and characters of today, the Songs for a New World. The first musical from Tony Award winner, Jason Robert Brown, this moving collection of powerful songs examines life, love and the choices we make.
Brown transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge, 57 stories about Fifth Avenue, to meet a startling array of characters that range from a young adult who is determined that basketball is their ticket out, to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams… and a soulless marriage.
With a powerhouse cast and a driving, exquisitely crafted score that runs the gamut of today’s popular music, SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD is a great way to bring the next generation into the theatre!
ALTER’S GOT TALENT｜February 9th
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE｜March 22nd-24th and 29th-31st
Please join us on the Father Edward Haskamp Stage in the Suttman Theatre for the Spring Musical, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE!
The winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millies was the 2002 season’s most awarded new show on Broadway! Based on the 1967 Academy Award- winning film, Thoroughly Modern Millie takes you back to the height of the Jazz Age in New York City, when “moderns,” including a flapper named Millie Dillmount, were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce and rewriting the rules of love. This high-spirited musical romp is a delightful valentine to the long-standing spirit of New York City and the people who seek to discover themselves there.
Set in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount from Kansas, who comes to New York in search of a new life for herself. Her grand plan is to find a job as a secretary for a wealthy man and then marry him. However, her plan goes completely awry. The owner of her dingy hotel kidnaps young girls to sell to the Far East, her wealthy boss is slow in proposing marriage and the man she actually falls in love with doesn’t have a dime to his name… or so he tells her.
Filled with flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon lady of a villainess that audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment.
