This scholarship has been established to honor Bill and Mary Ellen Hagan. During their college years, Bill and Mary Ellen Hagan began their life together on a blind date at Notre Dame. After graduating, Mary Ellen from nursing school in Chicago, and Bill from Notre Dame, they married in 7957. During their wedding reception, Bill was served orders for his Korean War assignment and left 2 weeks later. As a USAF first Lieutenant, he was deployed for 78 months, returning home to his wife and 9-month-old baby daughter.
Every year Bill and Mary Ellen would return to Notre Dame for football games and a visit to the GROTTO (where they became engaged). Bill served in several ND alumni positions throughout his life. He was especially dedicated to his class of 1951, writing class newsletters and planning reunions.
Dayton was their home for many years, with their five children attending Archbishop Alter High School. Their children would like to commemorate their parents, Bill and Mary Ellen by offering this scholarship in their name. They would like to support students in financial need so they too can enjoy the lifelong loyalty to Notre Dame.
