Ohio Tax Credit
Catholic Education Foundation –
Scholarship Granting Organization
The Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has been certified by the State of Ohio as a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO). This is great news because gifts to the CEF-SGO can be directed to Alter High School!
Turn your taxes into tuition to benefit Alter. Ohio taxpayers who donate to an SGO may be able to claim a dollar-for-dollar non-refundable tax credit on their state income tax return for up to $750 per donor (up to $1,500 if married and filing jointly).
This is a great way to support Alter High School and benefit from this new Ohio Income Tax Credit:
- Gifts are made directly to the Catholic Education Foundation; however, you can designate Alter to receive all or part of your donation.
- Gifts can be made online or via check.
- You will receive a thank you letter from the CEF for your records and to be used to receive your Ohio tax credit on your Ohio income taxes.
- PLEASE NOTE: According to a representative from the Ohio Department of Taxation, if you file a married joint return, each taxpayer will need to make their own $750 contribution to claim the maximum of $1,500. Separate acknowledgement letters will be provided for documentation of your gifts.
Because this provision is a tax credit and a re-direction of your taxes, we kindly ask that your gift to the CEF-SGO be in addition to your current support of Alter High School.

Frequently Asked Questions
We recognize that each individual’s tax situation is different, and we strongly encourage you to reach out to a tax advisor for more information on how an SGO credit could affect your tax liability.
When you make your gift online or via check, you can designate Alter to receive all, or a portion, of your gift.
- If an online gift, you will be prompted to select Archbishop Alter High School.
- Checks should be submitted with the gift form that you can download here: CEF-SGO GIFT FORM
- If you do not provide any designation, your gift will be distributed to a general tuition aid fund within the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to benefit students enrolled at a Catholic school withing the AOC.
We are not able to accept donations for a specific student, nor can you direct your donation to the Alter Annual Fund or a named scholarship. Your gift to the CEF-SGO will be awarded to a student who has a demonstrated financial need to help them afford a Catholic education. We humbly ask that your gift to the CEF-SGO be in additional to your current support of Alter High School.
No, the SGO donation would be applied to the total Ohio tax liability of $300 and, therefore, you should be able to have your prepayments refunded. Again, we would encourage you to consult with your tax advisor prior to making the gift.
The exact provision is section 5747.73 of the Ohio Revised Code.
